Protein in goji berries.

http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20718479,00.html

http://greatist.com/health/superfood-goji-berries

Perhaps the most super thing about goji berries is that eating them covered in chocolate is encouraged. Besides that, they have a high concentration of protein (about one gram of protein per tablespoon), contain essential amino acids, are crazy-high in vitamin A (36 percent of the daily recommended value per tablespoon), and a tablespoon has only 18 calories, making them a great snack option.

One study found that after consuming the berries in juice form for 14 days, subjects reported increased energy levels and improved athletic performance, quality of sleep, focus, digestive regularity, and mental sharpness — not to mention reduced stress and fatigue.

Some studies have also pointed to goji berries’ potential for cancer prevention. In two different studies, goji berries’ polysaccharides (a type of carbohydrate) were shown to inhibit the growth of both prostate cancer and colon cancer cells  .
To round out the list of superpowers, gojis also contain melatonin, which has been shown to help control weight gain, reduce triglycerides, increase “good” (HDL) cholesterol and decrease “bad” (LDL) cholesterol . Since melatonin is also the hormone in charge of regulating the body’s time cues, goji berries and other foods rich in melatonin could also help improve sleep.

New book. Bringing Sundance Home.

Bringing Sundance Home is the new book written and researched by Jerry Nickle. He claims that William Henry Long, who was working for a cattle ranch in Wyoming, was arrested under the name of Harry Longabaugh after Harry Longabaugh had been arrested and escaped for horse stealing. A case of mistaken identity which apparently William Henry Long went along with to a certain degree. Hence William Henry Long has been the Sundance Kid and Butch Cassidy's friend and sidekick in South America since that time. At this time I am not going to agree or disagree with Jerry. I have though for some time that Hiram BeBee was the Sundance Kid. This sheds a different light on the subject and I am still, as always, looking for evidence before coming to a conclusion. I will say it is possible and makes sense the way Jerry explained it.

Willilam Henry Long married Luzernia Ann Allred who was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Allred who is the brother of Hannah Caroline Allred who is my ancestorr. James Allred, their father, is the common ancestor of myself and Jerry Nickle. I am related to William Henry Long by marriage. After Luzernia Jerry is  descended from Chloe Jane Morrell Jackson and Jeremiah Jackson who may be the outlaw Kid Jackson that Charles Kelly referred to. They are Jerry's grandparents. Next is Clayton Jackson Nickle and Luzernia Jackson Nickle. They are Jerry's parents.

I met a 3rd cousin at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.

I met a third cousin that I had never met before in Salt Lake City at the Family History Library.  She is actually on a mission there and lives in North Carolina.  She grew up in Escalante, Utah. Nina Mae Wilson Hill is serving a LDS mission here in Salt Lake City. She came here from North Carolina. She was born and grew up in Escalante, Utah. Simmons Philander Curtis and Emaline Buchanan Curtis are our common ancestors.

She is descended from Nancy Eltnora Curtis Hansen and Franklin Bendixen Hansen, her great-grandparents. Next is their son Scott Marshall Hanson and Elizabeth Jane Singleton, her grandparents. Next is Winifred Mary Elizabeth Hanson and Junius Robert Wilson, her parents.

I am descended from Joseph Augustus Curtis Sr. and Emma Princetta Daley, my great-grandparents. Next Joseph Augustus Curtis Jr. and Estella Olsen Curtis my grandparents, and Max Joseph Curtis and Vesta Isabella Pettersson Curtis who are my parents.

We are both enjoying the gospel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and living at this time in the latter days when the family history research is on a quick rise in preparation for the millenium and fulfilling the words of many ancient and modern prophets.

10 Health Benefits of Turmeric.

http://fitlife.tv/10-health-benefits-of-turmeric/

1.  Prevents Cancer

Turmeric can help prevent prostate cancer, stop the growth of existing prostate cancer and even destroy cancer cells. Multiple researchers have found that the active components in turmeric makes it one of the best protectors against radiation-induced tumors. It also has a preventive effect against tumor cells such as T-cell leukemia, colon carcinomas and breast carcinomas.

2.  Relieves Arthritis

The anti-inflammatory properties in turmeric are great for treating both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, turmeric’s antioxidant property destroys free radicals in the body that damage body cells. It has been found that those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis who consume turmeric on a regular basis experience much relief from the moderate to mild joint pains as well as joint inflammation.

3.  Controls Diabetes

4.  Reduces Cholesterol Level

5.  Immunity Booster

Turmeric contains a substance known as lipopolysaccharide, which helps stimulate the body’s immune system. Its antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal agents also help strengthen the immune system. A strong immune system lessens the chance of suffering from colds, flu and coughs. If you do get a cold, a cough or the flu, you can feel better sooner by mixing one teaspoon of turmeric powder in a glass of warm milk and drinking it once daily.

6.  Heals Wound

7.  Weight Management

8.  Prevents Alzheimers

Brain inflammation is suspected to be one of the leading causes of cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. Turmeric supports overall brain health by aiding in the removal of plaque build-up in the brain and improving the flow of oxygen. This can also prevent or slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

9.  Improves Digestion

10.  Prevents Liver Disease

From October 1, 2014. Massive Online US Obituaries Project Will Help Find Your Ancestors.

https://familysearch.org/blog/en/massive-online-obituaries-project-find-ancestors/

The tremendous undertaking will make a billion records from over 100 million US newspaper obituaries readily searchable online. The newspapers are from all 50 states and cover the period 1730 to present. The completed online index will be fairly comprehensive, including 85% of U.S. deaths from the last decade alone. The death collection will easily become one of the most popular online genealogy databases ever, detailing names, dates, relationships, locations of the deceased, and multi-generational family members.

The Debate is over. Twist on Climate Change Hoax.

Climate Change Hoax.

I have maintained for some time that climate change attributed to a cause by man is a hoax and that climate change is natural.  Many, better qualified than myself, have said the same thing.

http://www.ijreview.com/2014/10/191907-guess-weather-channel-co-founder-said-man-made-climate-change/

  • There has not been man-made global warming in the past, is none in the present, and there’s no reason to fear that there might be any in the future.
  • Efforts to prove the CO2 emissions cause climate change have failed.
  • There has been no warming over the last 18 years.
  • There is no climate crisis, the oceans aren’t rising, polar ice is increasing, polar bears are increasing, and heat waves and storms are not increasing.
  • Climate change is a political and environmental agenda item without basis in science.

  • . . . . .
Here’s the problem: CO2 emissions have increased dramatically over the last two-hundred plus years yet temperatures have varied. Or, in the case of the last 18 years, haven’t moved at all. Regardless of arguments about “climate sensitivity,” CO2 simply cannot be the driver of global temperatures with such fluctuations.

    Chili Billy

On October 11, 1014 I attended the graveside services for my brother Bill.  In talking to those in attendance I learned a bit about Bill. One fellow from his union, Dan Thompson, that knew him and was a good friend
told me and my family that they used to call him Chili Billy.  I like the Chili Billi spelling.  Bill got into cooking chili went he went out to California and lived with his sister and her husband for a while.  Bill loved to cook as did Karen and Tony who still attend chili cook offs and make chili or salsa.  I believe they have won awards for both.  Bill had a chili cook off at the park in Price, Utah one time.  Tony said it was 1999.  I know it was when Marvin was still alive because he was there.

I just wanted to share this experience.  I was very amused by the term "Chili Billi".  Creative and so much fun. Thanks to Bill's close friend Brian for all he has done for Bill. It was a lot.

A Run at Carbon County Treasurer in Utah.

I went to a nephew's son's wedding reception in Price, Utah yesterday.  In driving around the town I say a few signs that said vote Kay Colosimo for County Treasurer.  That is great.  Kay is my full cousin.  My father and her mother are brother and sister.

Another thing that is cool about it is that my grandfather Nicholas Peter Pettersson served as Carbon County Treasurer.  Kay knows this and seems to find enjoyment in it.  Kay said she has worked in the office of the County Treasurer for up to 25 years.  Seems qualified to me and I even told her that she deserves it.

Another thing that is really cool about this is that I was named for my grandfather.  I was actually named for both of my grandfathers.  I was named Nicholas Joseph Curtis for Nicholas Peter Pettersson and Joseph Augustus Curtis.  This is way cool.  Good luck to Kay.

Two Great LDS Talks about staying out of Debt.

Pay Thy Debt and Live by President Ezra Taft Benson Ensign June 1987.

    https://www.lds.org/ensign/1987/06/pay-thy-debt-and-live?lang=eng&query=debt

“Do not accustom yourself to consider debt only as an inconvenience; you will find it a calamity.” (Samuel Johnson.)
“The debt-habit is the twin brother of poverty.” (Theodore Thornton Munger.)
“Poverty is hard, but debt is horrible.” (Charles Haddon Spurgeon.)
“I have discovered the philosopher’s stone, that turns everything into gold: it is, ‘Pay as you go.’” (John Randolph.)
“Think what you do when you run in debt; you give to another power over your liberty.” (Benjamin Franklin.)

My brothers and sisters, let us heed the counsel of the leadership of the Church. Get out of debt! Let us pay first our obligations to our Heavenly Father. Then we will more easily pay our debts to our fellowmen. Let us heed the counsel of President Brigham Young, who said: “Pay your debts, … do not run into debt any more. … Be prompt in everything, and especially to pay your debts.” (Discourses of Brigham Young, comp. John A. Widtsoe, Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1954, p. 303.)
President Joseph F. Smith added: “In the time of prosperity … get out of debt. … If you desire to prosper, and to be … a free people, first meet your obligations to God, and then … to your fellowmen.” (Gospel Doctrine, 5th ed., Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1939, pp. 259–60.)
President Heber J. Grant counseled: “Tithing is a law of God. … Be honest with the Lord and I promise [the Latter-day Saints] that peace, prosperity, and financial success will attend.”

To the Boys and to the Men by President Gordon B. Hinckley October 1998. Ensign November 1998.

    https://www.lds.org/general-conference/1998/10/to-the-boys-and-to-the-men?lang=eng

    https://www.lds.org/ensign/1998/11/to-the-boys-and-to-the-men?lang=eng

One of the happiest days in the life of President Joseph F. Smith was the day the Church paid off its long-standing indebtedness.
What a wonderful feeling it is to be free of debt, to have a little money against a day of emergency put away where it can be retrieved when necessary.
President Faust would not tell you this himself. Perhaps I can tell it, and he can take it out on me afterward. He had a mortgage on his home drawing 4 percent interest. Many people would have told him he was foolish to pay off that mortgage when it carried so low a rate of interest. But the first opportunity he had to acquire some means, he and his wife determined they would pay off their mortgage. He has been free of debt since that day. That’s why he wears a smile on his face, and that’s why he whistles while he works.

From November 2011. New Mexico Law and Local Sheriff Trump the Feds in Agenda 21 Land Grab.

This is an issue as much today as it was in 2011 when it happened.  Perhaps even more so.

    http://www.truthistreason.net/new-mexico-law-and-local-sheriff-trump-the-feds-in-agenda-21-land-grab

Federal agencies are party to a sinister plot for total control and depopulation through the United Nations, called Agenda 21 Sustainable Development.  Many federal employees who enforce bad environmental policies may not realize they are really enforcing UN Agenda 21.  Part of this plot is the Wildlands Project designed to remove humans from rural lands and allowing forests to grow out of control, even when forest fires threaten human life.
    ....
The feds backed down!  The feds were absent from the Tree Party Rebellion.  This is because within the county, the sheriff is the highest law enforcement authority in the land.

Paleo Diet. Paleolithic Diet. Caveman Diet.

    http://thepaleodiet.com/what-to-eat-on-the-paleo-diet/

What to Eat on the Paleo Diet

    EAT:

    • Grass-produced meats
    • Fish/seafood
    • Fresh fruits and veggies
    • Eggs
    • Nuts and seeds
    • Healthful oils (Olive, walnut, flaxseed, macadamia, avocado, coconut)

    DON’T EAT:

    • Cereal grains
    • Legumes (including peanuts)
    • Dairy
    • Refined sugar
    • Potatoes
    • Processed foods
    • Salt
    • Refined vegetable oils

Tips to make The Paleo Diet a routine part of your lifestyle:

    • For breakfast, make an easy omelet. Sauté onion, peppers, mushrooms, and broccoli in olive oil; add omega-3-enriched or free-range eggs and diced turkey or chicken breast.
    • Paleo lunches are easy. At the beginning of the week, make a huge salad with anything you like. A good starting point can be mixed greens, spinach, radishes, bell peppers, cucumbers, carrots, avocadoes, walnuts, almonds and sliced apples or pears. Store the salad in a large sealable container. Each morning prepare a single serving from the large batch and then mix in meat (ground beef, beef slices, chicken, turkey, ground bison, pork chunks, etc.) or seafood of choice (salmon, shrimp, tuna, or any fresh fish or seafood). Toss with olive oil and lemon juice and you are set.
    • For dinner, try spaghetti squash as a substitute for any pasta recipe. Top with pesto, marinara and meatballs. Roasted beets and their greens make a great side dish for pork. Asparagus, broccoli, and spinach can be steamed quickly. Salmon, halibut, or other fresh fish filets grill well with accompanying foil packs full of cut veggies with olive oil and garlic.
    • Berries and other succulent fruits make a great dessert. Pre-cut carrot and celery sticks, sliced fruit, and pre-portioned raw nut/dried fruit mixes are easy snacks.
Daily Sample Straight from Dr. Cordain’s The Paleo Answer:
    • Breakfast: Omega-3 or free ranging eggs scrambled in olive oil with chopped parsley. Grapefruit, or any fresh fruit in season, herbal tea
    • Snack: Sliced lean beef, fresh apricots or seasonal fruit
    • Lunch: Caesar salad with chicken (olive oil and lemon dressing), herbal tea
    • Snack: Apple slices, raw walnuts
    • Dinner: Tomato and avocado slices; grilled skinless turkey breast; steamed broccoli, carrots, and artichoke; bowl of fresh blueberries, raisins, and almonds; one glass white wine or mineral water. (Clearly, wine would never have been available to our ancestors, but the 85:15 rule allows you to consume three non-Paleo meals per week.)

    Apricot Seeds kill Cancer Cells.

    http://www.naturalnews.com/027088_cancer_laetrile_cure.html#

In 1952, a biochemist named Dr. Ernst Krebb, Jr. in San Francisco decided that cancer was a metabolic reaction to a poor diet, and a missing nutrient from modern man's diet could be the key to overcoming cancer. His research led to a compound found in over 1200 edible plants throughout nature. That compound is amagdylin,

Amagdylin is found with the highest concentration and necessary enzymes in apricot seed kernels. A primitive tribe, the Hunzas, were known to consume large amounts of apricot seed kernels. The hard pit had to be broken to get into the soft kernels. There was no incidence of cancer with them at all, ever. And they had long, healthy life spans. Laetrile was created by simply extracting amagdylin from the soft apricot kernels, purifying it and putting it into a concentrated form.

The 20 worst Things You can eat and Why.

    http://healthyliving.msn.com/nutrition/the-20-worst-things-you-can-eat-and-why#01

Basically any food modified by man.  Apparently the more it is modified the worse it is.  If it's not natural then it must be harmful.  Some of my favorites made the  list.  I love sausage, bacon, icecream, pizza, cheese, and deli meats.  Junk food or junk masquerading as food.  Looks like I will have to go with juices of fruits, berries and vegetables to maintain my health.

    01.  Sausage.
    02.  Bacon.
    03.  Frozen Dinners.
    04.  Burgers.
    05.  Potato Chips.
    06.  Diet Foods.
    07.  Margarine.
    08.  Artificial Sweeteners.
    09.  Popcorn.
    10.  Bagels.
    11.  Deli Meats.
    12.  Toaster Pastries.
    13.  Pizza.
    14.  Cheese.
    15.  Biscuits and Gravy.
    16.  Ice Cream.
    17.  Ribs.
    18.  Packages Cakes and Cookies.
    19.  Cinnabon.
    20.  Fried Foods in General.

    Sausage

(which includes everything from hot dogs to Slim Jims, bologna and salami), by definition, are processed. When you process meat (which serves to keep it fresh longer, among other things) by smoking, curing, salting it or preserving it via chemicals, you’re loading it up with sodium, and the meat used usually also contains a ton of saturated fat, boosting the fat and cholesterol content into the stratosphere. Not only does sausage contain very little in the way of nutrients, excessive consumption has also been linked to colon cancer.

    Deli meats

Like sausages, deli meats are also processed, and you really wouldn’t want to see what has to be done to an actual turkey breast in order to turn it into “deli-style” turkey. It’s basically liquefied, mixed with fillers and sodium, then re-formed, with the finished product devoid of just about any nutritional value. Stick with the real stuff instead.

8 Foods that Pack on Muscle.

    http://www.menshealth.com/nutrition/muscle-building-foods

    Eggs
    The Perfect Protein

How they build muscle: Not from being hurled by the dozen at your boss's house. The protein in eggs has the highest biological value—a measure of how well it supports your body's protein needs—of any food, including our beloved beef. "Calorie for calorie, you need less protein from eggs than you do from other sources to achieve the same muscle-building benefits," says Volek.

But you have to eat the yolk. In addition to protein, it also contains vitamin B12, which is necessary for fat breakdown and muscle contraction. (And no, eating a few eggs a day won't increase your risk of heart disease.)

How they keep you healthy: Eggs are vitamins and minerals over easy; they're packed with riboflavin, folate, vitamins B6, B12, D, and E, and iron, phosphorus, and zinc.

    Almonds
How they keep you healthy: Almonds double as brain insurance. A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that those men who consumed the most vitamin E—from food sources, not supplements—had a 67 percent lower risk of Alzheimer's disease than those eating the least vitamin E.

    Salmon

    Yogurt
Buy regular—not sugar-free—with fruit buried at the bottom. The extra carbohydrates from the fruit will boost your blood levels of insulin, one of the keys to reducing postexercise protein breakdown.

How it keeps you healthy: Three letters: CLA. "Yogurt is one of the few foods that contain conjugated linoleic acid, a special type of fat shown in some studies to reduce body fat," says Volek.

    Beef

    Olive Oil
How it builds muscle: Sure, you could oil up your chest and arms and strike a pose, but it works better if you eat the stuff. "The monounsaturated fat in olive oil appears to act as an anticatabolicnutrient," says Kalman. In other words, it prevents muscle breakdown by lowering levels of a sinister cellular protein called tumor necrosis factor-a, which is linked with muscle wasting and weakness

    Water
    The Muscle Bath

How it builds muscle: Whether it's in your shins or your shoulders, muscle is approximately 80 percent water. "Even a change of as little as 1 percent in body water can impair exercise performance and adversely affect recovery," says Volek. For example, a 1997 German study found that protein synthesis occurs at a higher rate in muscle cells that are well hydrated, compared with dehydrated cells. English translation: The more parched you are, the slower your body uses protein to build muscle.

Not sure how dry you are? "Weigh yourself before and after each exercise session. Then drink 24 ounces of water for every pound lost," says Larry Kenney, Ph.D., a physiology researcher at Pennsylvania State University.

How it keeps you healthy: Researchers at Loma Linda University found that men who drank five or more 8-ounce glasses of water a day were 54 percent less likely to suffer a fatal heart attack than those who drank two or fewer.

How to determine the Sex of a Chicken Egg.

    http://www.o-garden.ca/dowsing-eggs.html#axzz305vgAAsB

    Dowsing Eggs

A mystical way of checking for pullets - before they hatch

Here I’ve believed that you can’t easily tell the gender of chicks and determine whether they are a boy or a girl chick until they start to produce a comb – but why not try and sex the eggs before you put them to hatch?
It has apparently been used for a long time in Japan for sexing chicks, even in an assembly line, so that means lots of eggs.
What a great thing to know in advance, before going to all the work of hatching, brooding, raising and feeding a clutch, only to find out that the majority are roosters.

    Here’s How to Dowse Eggs:

You can tell the gender of the chick before you even start to incubate them by dowsing the egg using a small object on a string – some dowsers use strictly a special crystal, but anything will work, even a bolt or a pebble with fishing line tied around it, or even a wedding ring.
Put the egg on a flat surface away from other eggs.
Hold the pendulum over the egg.
Hold it completely still and then watch to see what the object does.
    • If it ends up going around in a small circle, the egg holds a rooster.
    • If it goes across in a straight line, the egg will hatch into a hen.
    • It will show duds, or infertile eggs by not moving at all.
Some people recommend you 'suggest' what you want - show me male, show me female, before starting the dowsing.
I’m still experimenting with dowsing eggs to see if it works and gives a better percentage of hens, eliminating the problem of dealing with those pesky roosters. I’m keeping an open mind, while staying skeptical!

26 compelling reasons why You'll Want Pulse as part of your daily diet

    http://www.jaredstory.com/challenge.html

    26 compelling reasons why You'll
Want Pulse as part of your daily diet
What follows are short clips gathered from research conducted on the 26 synergistic whole food ingredients believed to be found in Pulse. In synergy, the whole is more than the sum of its parts. Pulse is a delicious and healthy way to snack on whole foods. (1) DATES                                       Phoenix dactylifera
Dates have been found to reverse the progression of prostate cancer.  Cancer 1989 Aug. 1, 64 (3): 598-604
    (2) OATS                                            Avena sativa L.
Two studies presented at the American Heart Association's 71st Scientific Sessions confirmed the healthful benefit of oats. They found that frequent consumption of oats and nuts were linked with a low risk of coronary heart disease. A 12-year study examining more than 22,000 male doctors showed that with daily consumption, the risk of total cardiac death and sudden death fell. Food Ingredient News 1998 Dec; Vol. 6, No. 12
    (3) RAISINS                                       Vitis vinifera
Like grapes, raisins have a protective effect on the heart. They have also been known to "play a role in sustaining normal blood sugar levels."  Total Health, Dec 1995 Vol. 17, No. 6, p. 38
"A once obscure fruit acid, commonly found only in grapes and raisins, is now being looked at closely as a new source of health benefits for the colon." This acid slows down the development of colon cancer.  Total Health, April 1996 Vol. 18, No. 4, pg. 47
    (4) SESAME SEEDS        Sesamum indicum
Reduce susceptibility to oxidative stress. Oxidative stress has been named one of the major contributors to increased cancer risk. Sesame seeds are also very rich in thiamin.  Plant Foods and Human Nutrition. 1984 May, Vol. 22, No 5: pp. 337-44
    (5) SUNFLOWER SEEDS   Helianthus annuus

Aids functions of the liver.  Food-Chem-Toxical, May 1984, Vol. 22(5): pp. 337-44
Associated with lower cholesterol.  Nahrung, April 1999; Vol. 43, No. 2, pp. 341-349
    (7) BUCKWHEAT   Fagopyrum esculentum Moench
Consumption is associated with lower serum cholesterol and blood pressure values. Nutrition Research Newsletter, May 1995, Vol. 14, No. 5, pp. 60-61
    (8) QUINOA          Chenopodium quinoa Willd.
"Quinoa is one of the world's most perfect foods. Grown and consumed for thousands of years on the high plains of the Andes Mountains in South America, the Incas dubbed quinoa the 'mother grain' because of the plant's ever-bearing quality. They also believed the kernels to be sacred, since a steady diet of it appeared to ensure a long, healthy life." Very high in protein, calcium, B vitamins and Iron. The on-again, off-again phenomenon is officially named Crystal Geyser. City leaders five miles away in Green River have often dreamed about turning it into a major tourist destination. But they may have missed their chance.

There are many theories about what caused the recent decline in the geyser's performance: years of drought, a nearby drilling project, even attempted sabotage by a rival geyser owner who allegedly tried to destroy Crystal Geyser with dynamite.

Top 7 Benefits of Raw Honey.

    http://www.herbs-info.com/blog/the-top-7-benefits-of-raw-honey/

Top 7 Benefits Of Raw Honey

    1. Raw honey is a nutritional treasure chest. It provides vitamins and minerals in abundance. It is considered beneficial to anemia, arthritis (combined with apple cider vinegar), colds, allergies, obesity, parasites, insomnia and more. [2]

    2. Raw honey – in addition to being eaten – has traditionally been applied topically (i.e. put on the skin) and reported to be effective in cases of burns, wound infections, ulcers and even gangrene. Raw honey is reported to contain natural antibiotics and enzymes which assist kill pathogens and heal wounds. [2] Here is a giant list of cutting edge scientific studies recently done on honey as an antibacterial – including some fascinating research into its properties against nasties such as E. Coli and MRSA.

    3. Raw honey has not been filtered. In order to filter the honey, it is typically heated to 150–170 °F (66–77 °C) in order to pass through the filter more easily. Both the heating and the filtering remove valuable nutritional components from the honey. Raw honey contains the pollen (Filtration removes the pollen)- and pollen is though to be of benefit to allergy sufferers (especially if locally produced). Some scientific studies support this traditional use of pollen [3] however the evidence from science is not yet conclusive.
Even more serious than the filtering of honey, however is “Ultra Filtering”. Ultra filtering is a high-tech process which involves high-pressure forcing of the honey through ultrafine filters. This removes all of the pollen – which is a big problem because in addition to removing many of the nutritional qualities, the presence of pollen is the only way to determine the authenticity of honey.
In tests run by Food Safety News, much of the “honey” found on the shelves of big chain supermarket retailers and in the little packets at major fast food sellers contained no pollen whatsoever. According to Richard Adee, a US honey producer with 80,000 hives “honey has been valued by millions for centuries for its flavor and nutritional value and that is precisely what is completely removed by the ultra-filtration process.” [4]

    4. Raw Honey has not been pasteurized. Quoting Wikipedia: “Pasteurized honey is honey that has been heated in a pasteurization process which requires temperatures of 161 °F (72 °C) or higher. Pasteurization [of honey] destroys yeast cells. It also liquefies any microcrystals in the honey, which delays the onset of visible crystallization. However, excessive heat exposure also results in product deterioration, as it increases the level of hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and reduces enzyme (e.g. diastase) activity. Heat also affects appearance (darkens the natural honey color), taste, and fragrance.” [5]

    5. Heating of honey to just 37ºC causes the loss of nearly 200 components – some of which are considered antibacterial. Excessive heat can have detrimental effects on the nutritional value of honey. Heating up to 37 °C (99 °F) causes loss of nearly 200 components, some of which are antibacterial. Heating up to 40 °C (104 °F) destroys invertase, an important enzyme. At 50 °C (122 °F), caramelization of the honey sugars occurs. In general, large temperature fluctuations cause degradation of the product.

    6. Raw honey is more likely to be actual honey! This is a SHOCKER: Commercial honey is reported to be one of “the most adulterated food products” in the USA – with up to a shocking one third of the honey in the USA being smuggled from China and tainted! [6] [7] Locally produced, unpasteurized honey is much less likely to be adulterated and investigations have found that “every one of the samples… bought at farmers markets, co-ops and “natural” stores like PCC and Trader Joe’s had the full, anticipated, amount of pollen.” [4]
This is serious stuff and much imported honey has been found to contain either toxic ingredients or other sugars such as high fructose corn syrup or even banned antibiotics! “Food safety investigators from the European Union barred all shipments of honey from India because of the presence of lead and illegal animal antibiotics.  Further, they found an even larger amount of honey apparently had been concocted without the help of bees, made from artificial sweeteners and then extensively filtered to remove any proof of contaminants or adulteration or indications of precisely where the honey actually originated.” [6]

    7. Honey that has been heated contains higher levels of Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) – considered an unwanted component in food. [2] [8] Not enough research has been done to correlate HMF with problems in humans, however some are concerned over potential health risks – and HMF has been suspended from use as a food flavoring agent. [8]

Bonus – 8. Real honey is a true “survival food”! Real, raw honey is reported to be the only food that will not rot. Jars of honey from Ancient Egypt were uncovered and found to be still in good condition! Isn’t that remarkable? Perhaps the bees know something we don’t… food for thought… will all our technology we cannot make food that lasts that long – yet bees can. Perhaps we should revere and respect these remarkable creatures more (and maybe even stop telling ourselves that we are the most intelligent of all creatures?) Bees certainly need our best efforts to survive right now…

    Herbal Antibiotics

    http://www.commonsensehome.com/herbal-antibiotics/

How are herbal antibiotics different from pharmaceutical antibiotics?

Many pharmaceutical antibiotics are isolated chemical constituents.  They are one compound/one chemical – penicillin is penicillin, tetracycline is tetracycline and so on.  This makes them easier for bacteria to adapt to and counteract.  In contrast, herbs are much more complicated.  Garlic has over 33 sulfur compounds, 17 amino acids and a dozen other compounds.  Yarrow has over 120 identified compounds.  (It makes me look at my herbs with a new appreciation.)  In plants, the whole appears to be more than the sum of its parts.  The different compounds work together, often to produce better than expected results.  (See Chapter 2 of Herbal Antibiotics for a more detailed explanation.)

    Top 15 Antibiotic Herbs

Stephen lists the following as his top 15 antibiotic herbs.  I might also add cinnamon (perhaps it’s been added in his second edition, which I haven’t had the pleasure of reading yet).
    • Acacia
    • Aloe
    • Cryptolepsis
    • Echinacea
    • Eucalyptus
    • Garlic
    • Ginger
    • Goldenseal
    • Grapefruit Seed Extract
    • Honey
    • Juniper
    • Licorice
    • Sage
    • Usnea
    • Wormwood

13 Evidence-Based Medicinal Properties of Coconut Oil.

13 Evidence-Based Medicinal Properties of Coconut Oil

13 Evidence-Based Medicinal Properties of Coconut Oil
While coconut oil has dragged itself out of the muck of vast misrepresentation over the past few years, it still rarely gets the appreciation it truly deserves.  Not just a "good" saturated fat, coconut oil is an exceptional healing agent as well, with loads of useful health applications.

Some examples of "good" saturated fat include

    • Fat-burning: Ironic, isn't it? A saturated fat which can accelerate the loss of midsection fat (the most dangerous kind). Well, there are now two solid, human studies showing just two tablespoons a day (30 ml), in both men and women, is capable of reducing belly fat within 1-3 months.
    • Brain-Boosting: A now famous study, published in 2006 in the journal Neurobiology of Aging, showed that the administration of medium chain triglycerides (most plentifully found in coconut oil) in 20 subjects with Alzheimer's disease or mild cognitive impairment, resulted in significant increases in ketone bodies (within only 90 minutes after treatment) associated with measurable cognitive improvement in those with less severe cognitive dysfunction.[i]
    • Clearing Head Lice: When combined with anise spray, coconut oil was found to be superior to the insecticide permethrin (.43%).[ii]
    • Healing Wounds: Coconut has been used for wound healing since time immemorial.  Three of the identified mechanisms behind these healing effects are its ability to accelerate re-epithelialization, improve antioxidant enzyme activity, and stimulate higher collagen cross-linking within the tissue being repaired.[iii]  Coconut oil has even been shown to work synergistically with traditional treatments, such as silver sulphadizine, to speed burn wound recovery.[iv]
    • NSAID Alternative: Coconut oil has been demonstrated to have anti-inflammatory, analgesic and fever-reducing properties.[v]
    • Anti-Ulcer Activity: Interestingly, coconut milk (which includes coconut oil components), has been shown to be as effective as the conventional drug sucralfate as an NSAID-associated anti-ulcer agent.[vi]
    • Anti-Fungal: In 2004, 52 isolates of Candida species were exposed to coconut oil. The most notorious form, Candida albicans, was found to have the highest susceptibility. Researchers remarked: "Coconut oil should be used in the treatment of fungal infections in view of emerging drug-resistant Candida species."[vii]
    • Testosterone-Booster: Coconut oil was found to reduce oxidative stress in the testes of rats, resulting in significantly higher levels of testosterone.[viii]
    • Reducing Swollen Prostate: Coconut oil has been found to reduce testosterone-induced benign prostate growth in rats.[ix]
    • Improving Blood Lipids: Coconut oil consistently improves the LDL:HDL ratio in the blood of those who consume it.  Given this effect, coconut oil can nolonger be dismissed for being 'that saturated fat which clogs the arteries.'
    • Fat-Soluble Nutrient Absorption: Coconut oil was recently found to be superior to safflower oil in enhancing tomato carotenoid absorption.[x]
    • Bone Health: Coconut oil has been shown to reduce oxidative stress within the bone, which may prevent structural damage in osteoporotic bone.[xi] [Note: Osteoporosis is a Myth, as presently defined by the T-Score]

    Plant Seeds in Eggshells.

    http://www.herbs-info.com/blog/how-to-plant-seeds-using-eggshells/

Here’s a fantastic, easy idea we just came across – how to use eggshells to plant seeds. I love this one. There are numerous benefits to this idea:

    1) You don’t have to uproot the seeds when it comes to time to plant them out – simply crack the shells and the roots will grow through! This saves you from potentially damaging the young seedlings – and the shells will break down.

    2) The eggshells are biodegradable, so there is no waste.

    3) The seeds benefit from the nutrients in the eggshells. Eggshell contains a good quantity of bioavailable minerals – especially calcium; a mineral that is not only essential for humans, but essential to all stages of plant growth.

    4) You don’t have to use plastic pots, so it’s eco-friendly! Another win for the zero-waste home ;)

    5) It’s free!

    6) It’s fun!

A Follow up on Post Office Robbery. The Rest of the Story.

BOY CONFESSES THAT HE ROBBED POST OFFICE

Winter Quarters, June 21--Benny England, 16 years or age, was arrested this afternoon by national guardsmen under Lieutenant A. W. Morrison and is alleged to have confessed to the stealing of a sum of about $650 from the post office here a few days ago.  Samuel Dorrity, chief deputy guard for the Utah Fuel Company, obtained the information which led to the arrest
England gained admittance to the department when Miss Mary Rees, postmistress, became frightened at a mouse and he ran to her assistance.  The money had been set out preparatory to cashing a money order for a woman here and was missed shortly after England left.
England tells a confused and contradictory story, declining to state where the money is, if he has it.  He was questioned by Postoffice Inspector E. L. Jackson of Provo.
